President
Adam Tervola Hultberg ~ Graduate Assistant, St. Cloud State University
president@mbda.orgMr. Tervola Hultberg approaches the post of Assistant Conductor and Music Department Graduate Assistant after 8 years of teaching middle school and high school band. During his time at Detroit Lakes High School and Perham-Dent Public Schools, he has worked to provide quality instruction and dynamic performance opportunities for his students. Ensembles under his leadership have earned superior ratings at MSHSL contests as well as the admiration and respect of the communities. Among the highlights of his public school experience was hosting Dallas Brass in the spring of 2005. Members of the Perham High School Concert Band shared the stage with Dallas Brass performing a work called American Tableau.
Mr. Tervola Hultberg currently serves the Minnesota Band Directors Association as President-Elect. This organization is comprised of band directors representing all age levels and demographics throughout Minnesota. MBDA strives to provide young musicians with outstanding honor band experiences and teachers with professional development opportunities. He is currently pursuing a Masters degree in Conducting at St. Cloud State University. This past summer, Mr. Tervola Hultberg was invited to be a fellow at the Northwestern University. He studied with nationally recognized music education professor, Janet Barrett and Director of Bands, Mallory Thompson.
Adam holds a Bachelor of Music Education from Bethel University and a Master of Arts in Education from Hamline University. In his extra time, he enjoys playing trombone in the St. Cloud Symphony Orchestra, Park Rapids Area Community Band, and the Upper Mississippians. Adam and his wife, Amy currently reside in New York Mills, MN.

Sebastian Tackling ~ Duluth Public Schools
president.elect@mbda.orgSebastian Tackling is in his fourth year as the band teacher at Denfeld High School in Duluth. For three years prior to his assignment at Denfeld, he taught at Apollo High School in St. Cloud. A 2002 cum laude graduate of St. Olaf College, Tackling currently serves on the board for the Minnesota Band Directors Association, is a member of the American School Band Directors Association, directs the music program at Concordia Lutheran Church in Superior, WI, performs with the Twin Ports Wind Orchestra, coaches girls tennis at Denfeld, and teaches bassoon at the University of Wisconsin-Superior. His professional affiliations include MBDA, ASBDA and MMEA. He and his wife, Jennifer, live in the Lakeside area of Duluth.

Denise Pesola ~ Horizon Middle School, Moorhead, MN
secretary@mbda.orgDenise Pesola has been directing elementary and middle school bands for twenty five years. Currently she teaches at Horizon Middle School in Moorhead, Minnesota, where she directs several bands, the Honor Band and Jazz Band. She has a Bachelor of Art degree in Music Education from Concordia College in Moorhead, and a Master of Art in Music Education from the University of Minnesota where she was a graduate teaching assistant and principal horn in the wind ensemble under Frank Bencriscutto.
Denise is an active performer on horn, cornet and piano. She performs regularly with the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony, Prairie Wind Brass, Ameriikan Poijat, a Finnish brass septet and the Park Rapids Area Community Band. For several years she was adjunct horn teacher at Minnesota State University- Moorhead, North Dakota State University and International Music Camp.
Denise has been conductor of the Murikka Youth Band at summer camp in Tampere, Finland, and has served as All-State Band and MBDA coach, Fargo Moorhead Area Youth Symphony Board member, an out-state representative on the MBDA board, a trained mentor in the Minnesota Mentoring Initiative pilot program and most recently a regional representative on the MMEA Board of Directors. She is a member of MENC, MBDA and The International Horn Society.

Michael Dailey ~ Delano Middle School, Delano, MN
treasurer@mbda.orgMichael Dailey has taught Middle School music in Delano since 2006. His position there includes 6th, 7th and 8th grade band and lessons, 5th grade general music and a middle school jazz band. Previously he taught 5-12 instrumental music in Mahnomen, MN from 1998-2006.
He holds a degree in music education from Bemidji State University and a Master of Education degree from St. Mary's University. He enjoys performing and is in the trumpet section of the Buffalo Community Orchestra, he also has played in area jazz bands. Any other free time he may have is spent at his home in Delano with his wife Stephanie and three children: Owen, Dawson and Jenna.
Currently he is a member of the Music Educators National Conference (MENC) Minnesota Music Education Association(MMEA) and Minnesota Band Directors Association (MBDA). He served on the board of MBDA as small school representative from 2001-2003. He also in the past has had the opportunity to judge auditions for the MBDA 6-8 Honor Band and the 9-10 Honor Band.

Barry Zumwalde ~ Forest Lake High School
past.president@mbda.orgBarry Zumwalde teaches instrumental music at Forest Lake Area High School. He conducts the Symphonic Winds and Concert Band, directs the Jazz Band and Pep Band, and teaches lessons for woodwinds, brass and percussion. From 2000-2009, he taught instrumental music at North Branch Area High School in North Branch, Minnesota.
He holds a degree in Music Education and Trombone Performance from the University of Minnesota and is pursuing a Master's Degree in Music Education from the University of St. Thomas. Recently, he was a participant in the Northeast Arts Quality Teaching Network through the Perpich Center for Arts Education.
Currently, he is a member of Music Educators National Conference (MENC). He has served on the Board for the Minnesota Music Educators Association (MMEA) as Jazz Education Chair and the Minnesota Band Directors Association (MBDA) as Membership Chair and currently serves as Past President. Over the past several years he has presented clinics at the MMEA Mid-Winter Clinic, the University of Minnesota, the University of St. Thomas, St. Cloud State University, Minnesota State Mankato, and the University of Wisconsin - River Falls.

Northeast President (NEMBDA)
Becky Weiland ~ Centennial High School
bweiland@isd12.orgBecky Weiland has been a teacher at Centennial High School since 1991. At Centennial Becky directs a 10-12th Grade Symphonic Band, a Ninth Grade Band, Woodwind Choir, and Jazz 2. She is the woodwind specialist at Centennial high school teaching all woodwind lessons. Other "extra" duties are shared equally amongst the high school band staff. Prior to Centennial Becky began her career teaching in Menahga, MN. A graduate of Gustavus Adolphus College, Becky remains active playing saxophone with the Bend In The River Big Band and for the contemporary service at her church. Becky lives in Plymouth, MN with her husband, Jeff, and two kids Katie and David.

Scott Campbell ~ Sauk Rapids-Rice High School
Scott Campbell is currently in his 26th year of teaching and directing bands with the last 19 years being in Sauk Rapids-Rice. He is a 1983 graduate of Concordia College, Moorhead, MN, and he earned his Masters Degree from the College of St. Scholastica.
Mr. Campbell's duties at Sauk Rapids-Rice High School include conducting the Concert Band, Varsity Band, Jazz Ensemble I, Jazz Ensemble II, Wind Ensemble and Marching Band. He also teaches lessons to his students, piano methods and an exploratory music course.
Mr. Campbell is a founding member of a youth winds ensemble called Windfest Symphony in the St. Cloud area. He continues to be an active performer in the St. Cloud area and is member of MENC, MMEA, and MBDA.
Southeast President (SEMBDA)
Chuck Weise ~ Farmington
cweise@farmington.k12.mn.usCharles Weise currently works a band director in Farmington, MN. His responsibilities include concert bands, lessons and music theory at the high school and an 8th grade band and lessons at the middle school. In addition, he co-directs the pep band and Tiger Marching Band and directs the winter drumline and percussion ensemble. Prior to Farmington, Charles taught in the Mounds View public schools. In MBDA, Charles co-chairs the Young Band Literature session with Paul Kile, seeking out new and time tested pieces for young band. Charles holds Bachelor of Arts degrees from the University of St. Thomas in both Music Education and Music Performance. Charles and his wife Katie reside in Apple Valley.
South Central President (SCMBDA)
Deron Jimmerson ~ Waseca High School
jimd@waseca.k12.mn.usDeron Jimmerson has been the Director of Instrumental Music at Waseca High School since 2002, following five years of teaching experience in southwest Iowa. Mr. Jimmerson teaching duties include the Waseca Marching Jays, two jazz ensembles, two concert bands, the Bluejay Pep Band, and a strong lesson program for all students in grades 9-12. The Symphonic Band and Jazz I have been recipients of the MSHSL Superior Rating for many consecutive years. Additionally, Waseca has been proud to have strong representation each year at the MSHSL Solo/Ensemble Contest, averaging approximately 70 entries with over 60% receiving Superior ratings, and to have at least one student in the All-State bands for the past 15 years.
Mr. Jimmerson lives in Waseca with his wife, Ruth, and son, Jonah. He continues to be involved with music outside of teaching as a trombonist with the Southern MN Real Big Band and a pianist at St. John Lutheran Church.

Brock Duncan ~ Benson
bduncan@benson.k12.mn.usBrock Duncan is currently in his 18th year as the band director at Benson High School. Mr. Duncans duties include directing two concert bands, two jazz bands, percussion ensemble and teaching individual lessons. In addition, Mr. Duncan spends his summers directing the Benson High School Marching Band.
Duncan is a member and past conductor of the Prairie Winds Concert Band, a community band based in Willmar, MN.
Duncan is a graduate of Apple Valley High School and St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN. He is and active adjudicator and is a member of MBDA, Phi Betu Mu, and MMEA where has served as a region representative and All-State trombone and low brass section coach.
Brock and his wife Anne live in Benson and have three children.

Jim Iverson ~ Fergus Falls
jiverson@fergusfalls.k12.mn.usJim Iverson is currently in his 31st year of teaching and directing bands, with the past 23 years being in Fergus Falls. He is a 1977 graduate of Concordia College in Moorhead, MN, and he earned his Masters Degree from Southwest State University.
Mr. Iverson's duties at Fergus Falls High School include directing the Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Jazz I, Pep Band, assisting with Marching Band, and he also gives private instruction to his students.
Mr. Iverson is an active adjudicator, and he is a member of MENC, MMEA, MBDA, Education MN, and the Phi Beta Mu Fraternity of Minnesota Band Directors.

Josh Anderson ~ Chisago Lakes High School
membership@mbda.orgJosh Anderson teaches instrumental music at Chisago Lakes High School in Lindstrom. His teaching responsibilities include 3 concert bands, jazz ensemble, marching band, pep band, music theory and jazz history. He also directs the pit orchestra, the annual Variety Show and the One Act Play. Anderson graduated in 2005 with a Bachelor of Music degree in music education from the University of Minnesota. While at the University, Anderson served as the Collegiate Chapter President of CMENC, and as the undergraduate assistant conductor of the University Band and Women's Athletic Band. From 2002-2004, Anderson served as the Associate Conductor of the Calhoun-Isles Community Band in Minneapolis Minnesota and currently is the Music Director/Conductor of the Lakes Area Community Band. Before arriving at Chisago Lakes, Anderson spent four years as the summer marching band director and one year as full time band director at St. Francis High School in St. Francis Minnesota. Anderson resides in Dresser with his wife Melissa and son Brayden.

She lives in Lakeville with her husband, Shawn, and their two delightful children. She graduated from the University of MN Duluth and received her Master of Education degree from St. Marys University. She also enjoys working with the CMS Flute Choir and CMS Tuba Club each year.

David Miller ~ Apple Valley
david.m.miller@district196.orgA graduate of Gustavus Adolphus College, David Miller is in his 21st year of teaching 6-8 grade students at Valley Middle School in Apple Valley, MN, where he directs two 8th grade bands and one seventh grade band. In addition, he is responsible for two jazz ensembles, two percussion ensembles, and all brass and percussion lessons.
David enjoys arranging music for percussion ensemble, and has arranged an extensive set of Smart Music accompaniments for Book 1 of the Musical Magic series. He is active in the music community of Northfield, where he performs with the Cannon Valley Orchestra and is the keyboardist at Northfield United Methodist Church. He is also a founding member of the Bend in the River Big Band.

Terri Svec ~ Buffalo
tsvec@buffalo.k12.mn.eduTerri Svec received a Bachelor of Music Education from East Carolina University and a Master of Science in Music Education from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. She taught beginning and middle level band in the Chicago suburbs for five years prior to her current position at Buffalo Community Middle School. Her duties over the past 16 years have included band, choir, orchestra, classroom music, guitar and music technology. She has also been department chair and served on several district music committees and has been involved in piloting new music technologies in her shool. She is a member of MMEA/MENC and ASBDA in addition to MBDAand has served as Secretary and Treasurer for MBDA. She continues to perform on oboe with the Plymouth Concert Band and with small chamber groups throughout the west Metro area.

Jeremy Mann ~ Westwood Middle School, Spring Lake Park
mbdawebmanager@mbda.orgJeremy Mann has taught instrumental music education at many locations in Minnesota including Fairfax, Apple Valley, Rosemount, Lino Lakes, Hastings, and Spring Lake Park. He taught beginning and intermediate level bands for thirteen years. He has completed degrees at South Dakota State University (Brookings, South Dakota) in Music Education and Lesley University (Cambridge, Massachusetts) in Technology in Education. Jeremy has been involved extensively in training, advocacy, and innovation in the area of technology enhanced music instruction. His work with MBDA has included maintenance of the website, providing web-related resources, and technology related consulting since 2004. He currently lives in Farmington with his wife, Shelli, two daughters, Anika and Tabetha, and son, Donovan.
