Announcements
Beginning and Second Year Festival nomination forms are now posted! This years festivals will be held on Saturday, May 1st at South View Middle School in Edina. Guest conductor for the Beginning Band will be David Miller from Valley Middle School, with Kay Hawley from Hopkins West Junior High directing the Second Year group. Remember that nominations are on a first come, first served basis, so dont delay! If you have any questions, please contact Geneva Fitzsimonds at genfitzsimonds@edina.k12.mn.us.

President
Deron Jimmerson ~ Waseca High School
jimd@waseca.k12.mn.usDeron Jimmerson has been the Director of Instrumental Music at Waseca High School since 2002, following five years of teaching experience in southwest Iowa. Mr. Jimmerson teaching duties include the Waseca Marching Jays, two jazz ensembles, two concert bands, the Bluejay Pep Band, and a strong lesson program for all students in grades 9-12. The Symphonic Band and Jazz I have been recipients of the MSHSL Superior Rating for many consecutive years. Additionally, Waseca has been proud to have strong representation each year at the MSHSL Solo/Ensemble Contest, averaging approximately 70 entries with over 60% receiving Superior ratings, and to have at least one student in the All-State bands for the past 15 years.
Mr. Jimmerson lives in Waseca with his wife, Ruth, and son, Jonah. He continues to be involved with music outside of teaching as a trombonist with the Southern MN Real Big Band and a pianist at St. John Lutheran Church.

Marcia Thoen~

Thoen currently teaches instrumental music (band), 8th grade music exploration, and one section of 8th grade choir, in the Wayzata Public Schools, ISD #284, Wayzata, Minnesota. Dr. Thoen is a graduate of the University of Minnesota (Ph. D. in Music '06), The University of Iowa (M. A. Music Performance - Clarinet), and Minnesota State Mankato (B. S. Music Education). Dr. Thoen has taught all levels of instrumental music grades 5 through 12. She began her teaching career in Crookston, Minnesota (grades 5 - 8), continued at Loyola/Good Counsel Catholic Schools in Mankato, Minnesota (grades 7 - 12), and has taught at Wayzata West Junior High and Middle School (grades 6 - 9) since 1984. Spring Semester 2009, Dr. Thoen taught a string methods music education class at the University of Minnesota.
Besides her teaching assignments, Dr. Thoen regularly solos and performs in orchestras on clarinet, has conducted pit orchestras for numerous musicals, judges for the Minnesota State High School League, and maintains an active professional and research agenda. Two of her music groups have performed at the Minnesota Music Educators Association (1980 and 1994) and she has led and introduced sessions at state and national clinics. She is an active clinician and adjudicator in Minnesota. Her research focuses on music choices for children. Her dissertation is titled "A History of the Minneapolis Symphony/Minnesota Orchestra Young People's Symphony Concert Association: A Chronological Record of Traditions and Repertoire from 1911 until 2005." A paper presented at the Keokuk Symposium in 2007 was recently published in the Journal of Historical Research in Music Education.
Dr. Thoen is a member of NAME - MENC, MMEA, NEA, Education Minnesota, Wayzata Education Association (past secretary), NBA, MBDA, Musician's Union Local 30-73 AFM, the College Music Society, and the American String Teachers Association. She and her husband, Arthur J. Smith, reside in Plymouth, Minnesota.

Nikole Bowie ~
nickole_bowie@martin.k12.mn.usNickole Bowie is currently Director of Bands at Martin County West Schools following four years of teaching in Colorado and two years of teaching in Oklahoma. Bowies responsibilities include 5th Grade Beginning band, 6th Grade Band, Junior High Band, High School Concert Band, two jazz ensembles, pep band, drum line, independent music courses and lessons. She also directs the Martin County West Jr./Sr. High Marching Band in the summer.
Originally from Sherburn MN, Bowie graduated from Southwest State University in Marshall, MN with a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education. She also earned a Masters in Technology in Education from Lesley University in Cambridge MA.
She continues to be involved in music outside of the school day as a clarinetist for the Minnesota River Valley Wind Ensemble and playing/conducting for her local Trimont Area Centennial Band. Nickole Bowie lives in Trimont, MN with her husband, Linh.

Paul Kile ~ Edina High School
paukile@edina.k12.mn.usWhile in his second year at Edina High School, Paul Kile is enjoying his eleventh year of teaching, having been a former band director at Burnsville High School, Stillwater High School and Albert Lea High School. Mr. Kile has also worked at the collegiate level having taught at Bethel College as interim Director of Bands and in 2003, served as the co-conductor of the Greater Twin Cities Junior Wind Symphony. He completed a Bachelor of Music Education degree in 1993 from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, and in 1998, a Masters degree in Wind Band Conducting from the University of Minnesota. Mr. Kile is active as a clinician and performer playing trombone with the Allegro Sinfonia Orchestra based in Wayzata. As a conductor, Mr. Kile has appeared with the Encore Wind Ensemble, Chippewa Valley Symphony, Sheldon Theater Brass Band, and the Star of the North Band and is the current conductor of the Calhoun-Isles Community Band. An advocate of chamber music, Mr. Kile has commissioned several chamber works through the Cochran Chamber Commissioning Project and continues to seek out ways to incorporate chamber music opportunities for his students. He maintains professional affiliations with Music Educators National Conference, Minnesota Music Educators Association, College Band Directors National Association, World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles, and the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development. Mr. Kile lives in Burnsville with his wife, Laura, and children, Maxwell, 8, Marcella, 6, and Jacqueline, 4.

Jay Eichhorst ~ Mankato East Junior High School
jeichh1@isd77.k12.mn.usJay Eichhorst is the Director of Bands at Mankato East Junior High School. At East, Jay oversees the 7th grade and 8th grade concert bands, jazz bands, numerous small ensembles, teaches class instruction courses and lessons. Prior to coming to Mankato East, Jay was the Director of Instrumental Music Studies at Madelia High School for ten years. He started his teaching career at Butterfield-Odin Public Schools. In addition, he currently serves as associate conductor of the Minnesota River Valley Wind Ensemble, plays trumpet with the Mankato Symphony Orchestra, is executive director and co-founder of Prairie's Pride Summer Music Camp and serves on various arts committees.
