The Minnesota Band Directors Association and the Minnesota Music Educators Association are proud to announce the Third Annual MBDA Instrumental Teaching Symposium open to all band directors from August 5-7, 2010 in conjunction with the All-State Bands and Jazz Ensemble Camp at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota.
The Symposium is designed to suit wind band directors teaching at the elementary, middle and high school levels at any stage in his/her career.
Topics include:
- Student Leadership (Barry Zumwalde)
- Rehearsal Techniques (Dr. Scott Jones)
- Balancing Artistry and Education (Dr. Catherine Rand)
- Teaching Improvisation to Middle and High School Students (Trent Kynaston)
Special Sessions will include:
- Large Ensemble Conducting Lab (Dr. Richard Heidel)
- New Music Reading Session (sponsored by JW Pepper, Bismark)
- Hear from the Composer (Shelley Hanson)
Music businesses including JW Pepper, Eckroth Music, and Custom Batons will provide resources for perusal and for purchase during the symposium as well.
This workshop is intended for all wind band teachers who would like to: sharpen skills, expand knowledge of wind band resources and techniques, see the All-State Band and Jazz students in rehearsal and network with colleagues from across the state.
Two levels of participation are available:
- 1. The Conductor-Participant will conduct in a symposium-style setting on Thursday afternoon. (8 conductors will be selected on a first-come, first-served basis. An additional form to select conducting literature will be sent to these 8 conductors during the summer.)
- 2. The Observer-Participant will play in the ensemble and participate in all other sessions during the clinic. This track is not only of value to the conductor, but serves as a master class for the wind band conductor at all levels of experience.
College Credit: Graduate credit for the MBDA Instrumental Teaching Symposium is being offered through Concordia College. The cost of college credit is $105 for the 1 credit course. If you are interested in receiving college credit be sure to complete the Concordia Grad Credit Application at the bottom of this page, and mail it to the address provided along with the registration fee and a set of college transcripts. A syllabus for this "course" is also included below.
This clinic will be informative, supportive, and developmental for the experienced wind band teacher and the new wind band teacher.
In an effort to attract as many potential participants as possible, the MBDA Board has approved new, lower costs for this years Symposium.

For those who will be travel to Moorhead from a distance, rooms have been set aside in the Concordia College dormitories for participants who would prefer this option. Single rooms are $49.50/night. In addition, ten rooms have been reserved at the Courtyard Marriott, Moorhead for symposium participants. Call (218) 284-1000 to make your reservations. (Make reservations by July 1st.)
Rates of $109 per night for:
- Room with king-sized bed and sleeper sofa OR
- Room with two queen-sized beds
